Very thankful to Jeannie Jones for this segment on 93.9 WKYS. I’m fresh off the plane less than 24hours ago doing a show in Paris and a few days before in Puerto Rico. Needless to say, it feels good when you get love from your own. uber blessed. Jyeah!
I write songs, everybody knows this. A lot of my material comes from my personal life and often times “names have been changed to protect the guilty” (c) syncro. In doing so I may reveal personal things - Autumns Rules which is about my bout with depression and suicide or unrequited love - Nicotine or Only. In being an entertainer I use my family as part of what I do as well, I may have my kids sing on songs or write songs about my wife e.g. Love Ya Babe. Sometimes however I have made up stories about them as well. Herein lies the problem. This is where it can get blurry, I usually interpret this subject like a comedian that does jokes about their wife and kids…I think mostly that they are jokes but at times as an artist I also wonder about how the family takes their “jokes” and at times do they get offended? Should they be offended?
Recently, I was in Puerto Rico and did a piece that I called “52 messages” a narrative about a wife that has left her husband far too many text messages and his thoughts, feelings of guilt and ultimately his insensitivity when he leaves only a few messages. It’s a commentary on the differences in relationships. And how women and men differ and without a thought, I cast my wife as the wife and me as the insensitive prick. Firstly, my wife doesn’t leave me 52 messages, she never has and secondly, I’m not an insensitive prick…most of the time. In doing this piece, blurring this line between family and art, I offended my best friend and that was the last thing I ever wanted to do. So you know the history, my wife has been the Brain to my Pinky. Truthfully, she is responsible, for the most part, for my success. Yeah I rap, sing and produce a lil bit, but she has handled the business and brand of Kokayi, styled photoshoots, works with my interns, consults on album concepts, picks tracks, raises kids, wifes it up and maintains her own individual career and pursuits and has done so for more than a decade. So in doing this piece in public, she took offense and rightly so, it got too blurry, the line got crossed, and I caused some pain in the process. I spoke off mic to folks and let em know that nah my wife ain’t like that, but I should have done that publicly as I did the piece. My wife is no slouch and the sole quality that attracted me to her moreso than anything else was the fact that she didn’t give a shit about Kokayi the rapper, she wanted to know me…gubment name and all. She’s my best friend and I feel it necessary, without coercion to make a public apology for that blurry space.
I swear to bob this has been a great trip so far. I miss the fam as always, this time however i’m taking notes, securing maps and plotting my return. me and the “can you hear me now” have to poli on their coverage issues.. yeesh. I mean the V iPhone isn’t even international yet…shum on mayng. I said all that to say i can’t upload my photos due to wack covergae out this yiggidy but rest assured as soon as i’m home, i’m posting these jawns. i may withhold some location information only because the beach jont was so beautiful i’d hate for it to become a tourist trap. So things you should do in Puerto Rico: 1. Rent a car 2. visit old San Juan - but don’t make it all you see, ask the locals where they hang out, you’ll fare far better. 3. go to Isla Verde and eat at Ceviche House..i recommend the Conch ceviche.. i almost slapped an expectant mother after two bites.. lo siento mami. 4. go to my favorite beach as of right noun..hint: 22 to 686. is all i’m saying. Enjoy reblog this under travel.. i’ll post pics when i get home. as always follow me on twitter @kokayi or @koklarock. if you dig it reblog, retweet, revisit your old life, be honest about who you were and where you are, appreciate every breath and live this jont to the fullest. Ciao. next stop Paris. a prochaine fois
The QN5 MEGASHOW is an annual destination event thrown exclusively by NYC’s independent hip hop label, QN5 Music, for their fans. It is the only time the entire label’s roster (Tonedeff, CunninLynguists, PackFM, Substantial, Mr. SOS & Kokayi) converges on the same stage on the same night.
QN5 fans (ie. Blue Schoolers) from all over the world make their pilgrimage to this event to celebrate all things baby blue and see one of the most energetic and entertaining shows in Hip Hop. This event has torn down legendary spots such as CBGBs, BB Kings, The Roxy (LA) and now makes its second visit to NYC’s Highline Ballroom. As usual, there will be no photography or videotaping of this event permitted, so you’ll just have to be there to see for yourself.

Ran across this system to match potential dog owners with dogs in need of a home. Sponsored by Pedigree and NEC, the interface is reminiscent of HAL with a far better accent. Try the wonderment that is Doggleganger.
